Many major players in the coffee sector believe in the urgent need to transform agricultural practices and share the belief that certification by credible systems such as ours are able to help with that transformation. However, is Certification really the magic bullet that it is touted to be?

There are around 17.7 million small-scale coffee farmers in the world, the vast majority of them in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. With 70% of coffee farmers worldwide still yielding less than 4 bags per hectare, working only with the farmers who are already thriving is a missed opportunity (Jan Von Enden, 2017).

This is not to say that credible certification does not have a role anymore. Just to note that there are limitations of certification as tool to drive change in agricultural production systems at scale.
